Lake Victoria - Nile Marathon

The Lake Victoria Marathon is an International annual event to create awareness about the challenge of plastic pollution and how to foster responsible plastic waste management and disposal, raise resources to support initiatives that seek to foster awareness about responsible use and disposal of plastic waste along the Nile Basin.
The Marathon is part of the Refresh Environment and Climate Campaign that TRANET-Africa has been running since 2023.
The marathon will take place each in Jinja City in Uganda the source of the Nile on Lake Victoria on the 22nd of February 2025.
Lake Victoria is desired since it benefits several countries in Africa ranging from Burundi, Rwanda, DR Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Sudan Sudan and Kenya among others that form part of the Nile Basin.
Lake Victoria gains it's waters from and passes through those countries and pours into the Mediterranean sea thereby carrying along plastic waste disrupting water transport, polluting the water and blocking drainage systems leading to flooding.
The Lake Victoria has become a dumping site for plastic waste especially plastic bottles as bags among others. Studies show that the plastic waste is carried into the Mediterranean sea. The UN says that plastic waste take about 400 years to degrade and its presence in the land and waters gets into living organisms and crops consumed by human beings causing serious health consequences in the long run.
It is on that brief background that the Marathon Derives it's name from Lake Victoria-Nile Marathon due to its strategic location.
More details will be shared here in the due course.
